Pacific Harbor Seals -- aren't they cute?
Photo above: are they shedding? (Don't forget to click on the pictures so you can see a larger image.)

I didn't know they came in so many colors and patterns.

  5. Hey Lynne, I also didn't realize they came in various shades or colors. Of course, these are harbor seals, and my other post mentioned sea lions which are a different species.

Hi Linda - I guess if I were keeping score with other mammals I could say these seals were lifers, too. I don't remember ever seeing these cuties in the wild - I may have seen a few in Monterey Bay Aquarium, or possibly at Sea World or something like that.

Wren, you should have seen them when they wanted to change positions. It was comical in a way; they would "bounce" until they were satisfied with their new position. Can you imagine bouncing on a rock? Ouch!

Kathie, I wonder if Tucson has an aquarium and these cuties might possibly reside there. But seeing them in the wild is so much nicer. Just like birds, it's always better seeing them in the wild than in an enclosed area. If you should ever come out to the West Coast, let me know and we can try to find some of these harbor seals for you to see.

  6. The yearly protests about the Canadian seal hunts are happening now. I don't know how people can club seals. They are adorable.

  7. Those seals are so cute--do you think the spotted ones are juveniles? Or is that just their summer coat?

    Sweet, Mary.

  9. I'm with you, Ruth. They are so adorable, and I can't imagine people clubbing them to death. That sounds so cruel.

Ruthie, harbor seals all have spots. They come in various colors, too. Here is a really good web site to read more about them: http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~halmark/educati.htm

Mary, are they cute? And they don't "bark" like the sea lions do. They are relatively quiet animals compared to the sea lions who are constantly noisy.

  10. I think they are molting (shedding). I was reading that they do that after the breeding season which is from March to May.

  11. Red, I read that, too. I assume March to May you are referring to their breeding season. June through August is their molting season. So we caught them in the midst of their molting season.

  12. Seals are very cute. I saw Gray Seals in Rhode Island and they were very cool. I like your blog.

  13. Leedra, thank you for stopping by and commenting. I have visited your lovely blog. You are certainly a very artistic and talented person. I love your stained glass. I will be adding your blog to my blog roll since I enjoy your photography and stained glass. I'll be sure to visit your web site, too.

Dakota, thank you for stopping by. As you know I've been visiting and commenting on your blog. I've been enjoying your commentary on your Rhode Island trip. Do you have any photos of the gray seals you saw in Rhode Island? I don't think I've ever seen that kind.
